What: Free the
Nipple
When: 2014-2015
Where: In the
United States
Why: The “free
the nipple” campaign/movement was started as a protest against the censorship
of women’s nipples on the internet and women’s breasts in real life, challenging the double standard that men’s
nipples and chests do not have to be covered. The conversation was sparked by
a movie made in 2014, and had backing from celebrities such as Miley Cyrus and
Lena Dunham. I consider this protest failed because it was a very highly
trending topic in 2015, but the campaign has lost this social media interest
and has achieved none of its goals. The response by women to post pictures of
their breasts resulted not in a change of instagrams guidelines, but instead resulted
in the pictures being removed by instagram, and nothing being changed. The
campaigns other goals such as allowing women to be topless and breastfeed in
public (their website claims it is illegal for women to be topless and
breastfeed in 35 states, however these numbers do not seem to be correct for
breastfeeding after my research), has also not wavered legislation.
