Oppositional frames: An oppositional frame
is used within a protest when a certain person, or group, is trying to show
their followers who/what to oppose.
Example: An example of this could be the abortion debate. On one side of the argument, there is a group that is “Pro-choice”. They believe that it is a women’s choice whether or not to have an abortion, and thus opponents of abortion can be considered as people waging a “war on women”. However, the other side calls themselves “Pro-life”. Believing that all life begins at conception, they believe that throughout a pregnancy, a human life is at stake, the baby's. Thus, the opponents of "life" can be considered murderers.
From The Text: In the article “Information,
Communication, & Society”, author Emiliano TrerĂ© explains how oppositional
frames can help shape a person’s/group’s argument and stances; “Therefore, the
construction of identity presupposes a positive definition of those
participating in a certain group, and at the same time, a negative
identification of those who are opposed.”
