Major
League Baseball team owners
in 1994 were very wealthy people. They were seen as the 1%. Over the course of
years that Major League Baseball had been around, the owners continually profited off of contract
proposals that the Players
Union could not successfully overturn. In 1986-1995, The Players Union was done giving
in to the owners. Although there was never a lack of effort to make changes
from the Players Union,
they were just never on the winning side of things. They wanted to improve the
quality of their financial status for the rest of their careers. For this to
happen, they had to make sacrifices. Included in those sacrifices included some
loss of respect from the fans.
1) Team Owners & winning contract
disputes. The Players Union & having a contract dispute result as a benefit
for them.
2) The purpose of the paragraph was to
explain how owners made money over the Players Union in the past. As a result,
the Players Union was motivated to win a contract dispute over the owners.
In 1986-1995, the Players Union was
determined to settle a contract dispute in their favor against the owners. The
Players Union did not appreciate that the owners already profited from previous
contract proposals and also wanted to limit the amount that the players could
make (salary cap). In previous seasons, the Players Union did lose settlements
against the owners, but for them to win the current collective bargaining
agreement, they had to make sacrifices such as locking out. Included in the
sacrifices included an astonishing loss of respect from the fans.
