R Draft

Rhetorical Draft


  The SB 1070 bill was passed to weed out all the immigrants that aren’t supose to be here.  The identity that caused this action was the government meaning the Arizona senate. 
 The other identity would be the other side of the conflict the protesting immigrants. This protest works through both sides.

 This Movement has a lot of key   points    to explain. The bill states “Prohibits state and local law enforcement from restricting the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
. Requires law enforcement, in making a lawful stop, detention, or arrest for another law, to make a reasonable attempt to determine the person's immigration status where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is not lawfully present in the country.
Creates a new misdemeanor offense for the willful failure to complete or carry an immigrant registration document under certain circumstances.
Authorizes a peace officer involved in enforcement related to human smuggling to lawfully stop anyone in a motor vehicle on reasonable suspicion that the person is violating a civil traffic law that creates misdemeanor offenses, in certain circumstances, for stopping to hire and pick up passengers for work while blocking traffic, or getting hired in such a fashion, and applying for or soliciting work while unlawfully present in the country.
 This act creates misdemeanor offenses (or felonies if 10 or more illegal immigrants are involved) for unlawfully transporting or concealing an illegal immigrant or encouraging one to enter or remain in the country illegally.
 This authorizes a peace officer to arrest a person without a warrant on probable cause that the person has committed a public offense that makes the person removable from the country.
 This requires employers to keep employee eligibility records for three years or the duration of employment
 It allows employers to raise an affirmative defense of entrapment to a charge of knowingly or intentionally employing unauthorized immigrants.
While adding to the list of reasons a peace officer must remove and either immobilize or impound a vehicle.”

      Do to the law the protesters felt violated of their rights? The law states that unauthorized immigrants cat be employed.  Employers will have to check their records to make sure that they’re able get a job. Another one of the statements states that if a immigrant looks suspicious of committing an offense and getting deported without a trial.  Its based on all that I remember the day that governor Brower was going to sign the bill a lot of immigrants were protesting outside.

      Thanks to our president the bill was eliminated and the protest was over or so we thought. 4 years later a stock govnernor named Donald Trump decided to bring back the argument but this time he went further insulting the citizens that use to be immigrants. At first we were all offended but then when he decided to run for president the movement rose up ounce again and still going on today.
     This movement is still powerful as ever.  Since the SB1070 started all this in the first place the movement will always go on until everything is balance with the same rights.

    1. Is the historical context elaborate enough to understand the protest and why it happened?

    • Great history on other human rights protests (Women’s Liberation Movement, the Civil Rights Movement). It’s important to understand that history before trying to understand what led up to the SB1070 bill.
    • A rather large hole in this section is the history that is specific to the SB1070 bill and not just human rights campaigns in general. This section could really use some background on primarily Hispanic immigration, the United States’ relationship with Mexico, why some people are opposed to such massive illegal immigration (the burden on taxpayers, for example), why other people defend the illegal immigrants (even the word “illegal” is contested), and what policies have been in place historically to keep people from illegally immigrating across the U.S. Southern border.

    2. Are the first two sections organized in a way that is the most effective and clear?

    • Your historical context section is very well organized. It is chronological and easy to follow.
    • Your rhetorical context is a little less clear. The organization seems to center off of the SB1070 bill direct evidence. I would focus on what was actually being said during your protest. Are there any newspaper articles that directly quote protestors? Look at your protest to discern what the goal of your protest was and how the protest went about achieving that goal.

    3. Is the distinction between historical and rhetorical context clear and does the distinction make sense?

    • Your historical context section is very clear and does not hold any rhetorical context.
    • Your rhetorical context section is primarily made up of the law itself. While this is good rhetorical context (it is after all what the protest was based upon), you need more varied rhetorical context quotes in order to support the argument that you are trying to make.

    4. Is the evidence used appropriate and effective?

    • One of the biggest things that you need to fix in your essay is the lack of evidence used and cited. To truly develop your essay, you are going to need direct quotes from either people who witnessed the protest or people who are writing about the protest. Use what they have to say to backup your claim that, for example, people were deported without a trial. This will greatly increase the faith your reader has in you and will make your essay more effective.
    • The evidence that you did use, primarily the language of the law itself, is an important addition. It really helped to make clear what people were protesting. If I were you, I would break up the block quote that you have currently into the most important pieces that caused people to protest.

    5. Is my rhetorical context section organized and complete?
    • If you break up the block quote into the smaller pieces as I mentioned above, you could organize your rhetorical context section in a manner that was clearer. This could be done using the tried and true method of claim, quote, and explanation. Take this quote for example: “Requires law enforcement, in making a lawful stop […] to make a reasonable attempt to determine the person’s immigration status where reasonable suspicion exists.” Just this one quote says so much!

  4. 1. Is the historical context elaborate enough to understand the protest and why it happened? You have a lot of historical context on what types of movements influenced the SB1070 protest and that is great. It is important that the reader has some background information on such large movements that are focused on race and rights, for sure. However, I encourage you to give more history on the law here rather that focusing on it so much in your rhetorical context section.

    2. Are the first two sections organized in a way that is the most effective and clear? As I just mentioned, by bringing up some of the information you have in the rhetorical section, your historical context will be fully effective. As for the rhetorical context section, I agree with Libby, that by adding more quotes and ideas of the protesters, as well as their protest strategies will make it more clear.

    3. Is the distinction between historical and rhetorical context clear and does the distinction make sense? There is a clear distinction on what is historical and rhetorical context. I would suggest writing more on how the protest has had a larger impact on the community and those affected by SB1070. Moreover, I would give more details on why people were supporting it and disapproving it because it would help the reader see both sides of the protest.

    4. Is the evidence used appropriately and effectively? I think you have good evidence, it just needs to be cited to be used appropriately and effectively. By using more primary sources in the rhetorical context section, your paper will be more believable.

    5. Is my rhetorical context section organized? I would suggest writing a little more about the protest in the rhetorical section to make it more organized with developed thoughts. Right now, you have a good basis, just expand more on your thoughts and ideas and your paragraphs will come together and allow you more opportunity to provide more experiences for author credibility.
