The Desaparecidos of Argentina: "The Disappeared"
Who: Argentinian families, in particular, mothers of the Disappeared
What: After the Military Junta seized power in Argentina, they began a campaign to wipe out left-wing (terrorism meant to overthrow capitalist systems and replace them with socialist societies) terrorism with more terrorism. Thousands of people, most dissidents and innocent civilians were arrested and vanished. Once Democracy was restored, a national commission investigated the fate of the Disappeared and congress repealed the Pardon Law, and re opened investigations of the war crimes. Mothers and Families of the 30,000 victims demanding information on what had happened to their children essentially highlighting for the world, the violations of human rights.
When: March 1977 after the Dirty War of the military dictatorship (1976-1983)
Where: Esmeralda, Estadio Nacional de Chile, Villa Grimaldi, Colonia Dignidad, Departamento de Investigaciones, Argentina
Why: To find information on the whereabouts of their children and raise global awareness of the human-right's violations
Proof of Identity: The mothers of Los Desaparecidos can be found in the many forms of protest and in the trial of Juntas, CONADEP (National Commission of the Disappearance of Persons). These act were pressured by their organization through their use of symbols and slogans, and silent weekly protests. They're protests are seen through the faces of their children, the empty shoes, and the empty chairs, etc.
