Women Strike For Peace

Who/What: The Women Strike for Peace (WSP) organization was a group of women that was created to protested against the "atmospheric nuclear testing held on November 1, 1961," (Encyclopedia Britannica). Their early efforts of protest against nuclear weapons was especially effective at the height of the Cold War during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and they have been credited to being a big part of the signing of the Nuclear Test-Ban treaty signed in 1963.

When: The group was formed in 1961, but was prevalent until the end of the 20th century.

Where: The group was formed in America, and specifically rallied in the DC area.

Why:  Their goal was to end the testing of nuclear weapons and voice concern of the lasting damaging effects that come from a nuclear explosion. They specifically wanted to "voice concern... about the hazards posed by such testing to children's health," (Encyclopedia Britannica). Later in their history as an organization they focused their attention on the complete abolition of nuclear arms until the end of the 20th century.

Proof Identity: The WSP was specifically geared to woman, but their aims at the beginning of their creation to raise awareness of the negative effects of nuclear testing on children gears the identity to be more of the American Mother. In my eyes I see two possible identities to write about, one taking a general approach while the other takes more of a specific approach. The general being woman in America, and the more specific being American mothers.
