What kind of place is the: Philippines

People Power Movement of 1986

Which place is significant for your protest?
Because the protest was all about the Filipino population overthrowing their dictator, my place will be the Philippines. It will be directly related to the Filipino government.

What did people associate with the place prior to your protest?
The Philippines were primarily colonized by other larger and more powerful countries. It was not a sovereign country until 1945, at the end of the second World War. At the time that Japan was overthrown by the Allies, it was forced to give up its rule over the Philippines and the Philippines were thus freed from Communist rule. The country was quiet politically until the election of Ferdinand Marcos, who began a 20 year rule over the country.

Did the protest change how people understand the place?
The Philippines was seen as a democracy after Marcos was overthrown. They are currently considered a "middle power." The Philippines are also known to have a large Catholic population (81%).
