Los Desaparecidos: The Disappeared Topic Exploration

Los Desaparecidos

1. The Los Desparecidos is a historical Argentinian event that deals with not just Argentina but a majority of Latin America and their citizens. However, I wanted to draw attention to the mothers of The Disappeared. A lot of my material is coming from literary works used by my previous professor during her presentation. My Freshman year of college I took Latin American studies and one of our segments was dedicated to the activism in Argentina revolving around The Disappeared. There is also a documentary that I'm pulling a lot of information from called 'Our Disappeared' from PBS.

2. The primary focus of my research paper will be around the identity of mothers involved in The Disappeared. Their efforts are what caused an international protest against the civil rights in Argentina and I wanted to do an analysis on their protest rhetoric. While the efforts of what the government called 'radicals' is just as equally as important, I figured that because of the appeal the mothers created across the world, knowing how and why it was done would make for an intriguing paper.

3. Desparecidos is the Spanish word for "The Disappeared" and has been a symbol for thousands of Argentinian families. In 1976, a military junta seized power over the Argentinian government and campaigned to wipe our left-wing terrorism. Under military rule, thousands of people (most dissidents and innocent) civilians were arrested for terrorism and then just vanished without a trace. After democracy was restored, an investigation was developed by a national commission to find out what happened to these vanished civilians. Thousand of families have come together in protest to demand justice and bring to light what happened to their lost once that are to this day unheard from or unseen.

4. My biggest concern in the Bibliography, finding the right material that I can rely on for solid information, and overall the structure of my paper. While I can make a web to bring together my ideas, I am concerned that it will not be fluent enough or organized for the audience to really understand and enjoy. Citations are also another big concern because if done wrong, it kind of ruins the credibility of your paper and puts you at risk for plagiarism.
