Topic for research essay

Who:The issue about Net Neutrality came about around 2014 when the FCC, who has set up regulations to keep the internet a free and neutral place, were overruled on their previous ruling, essentially taking away the guarantee that the internet would remain untainted by telecom companies and their influence.

What: Net Neutrality is essentially a term created to describe the goal to keep the internet a free and public space by labeling it a "Common Carrier" which simply means something that is considered a public service. 

When: This was battled from 2007-2015.

Where: This occurred all around the US. 

Why: It is important and relevant because the internet is a daily part of normal life in the 21st century. Without Net Neutrality in place internet providers could be subject, by big telecom companies such as Version or Comcast, to provide different quality service to specific webpages and the like. The fear was that these companies would target websites of competitors making them harder to access for the public and then price gouge customers who want to get back the regular speed of service that used to exist. 

I'm working on a more specific identity, but I think because of the nationwide backlash with all the petitioning and protesting it is safe to say that the identity concerned with this issue is internet conscious Americans, but also smaller businesses.
