Major
League Baseball Players Association Strike 1994-1995
1) On
January 18, 1994, owners of major league baseball teams proposed a new revenue
system for teams. It incorporated a salary cap for teams. It basically
restricted how much an organization can spend on players every year. As a
result, the MLB Players Association went on strike because they did agree with
the idea. The new system would also restrict how much a player could receive on
a contract because the organization was limited to their amount of spending.
The players went on strike and decided to stop playing mid-season. For the
first time, a World Series was not played.
2) I
have chosen the identity of the Major League Baseball Players Association
because they play the largest role in the protest. Without their disagreement,
there would not be a protest. Their decision to not finish out the season had a
direct impact on their teams, families, economy, and fans.
3) The
MLBPA went on strike and refused to finish the season until the new revenue
system was reformed. Because Major League Baseball did resolve the issues, the
players made a statement by not playing. Although players had gone on strike
before, this was the first time that it resulted with not having a World Series
champion.
4) When
it comes to issues with this topic, I am worried about not having enough
reliable sources to refer to. In sports, many stories come from the media, and
although there is plenty of information on the topic, I need to dig deep to
find sources that are not “popular sources”. Also, when it comes to this example,
it may be hard to write enough information that will seem repetitive. That will
be a very difficult feat to overcome but I will have to pull sources that view
many different aspects of the protest in order to keep the reader engaged throughout
all fifteen pages.
