Who/What: The hashtagged slogan #MyBlackIsBeautiful is homage to the organization "My Black Is Beautiful" (MBIB) started by Proctor & Gamble, the personal care product company (Wiki). The object being noted is the slogan itself.
Where: This slogan is primarily used on websites that utilize hashtagging (Twitter and Instagram) and they have a page on Facebook as well.
When: The organization MBIB was established in 2007, so it follows that the hashtag started around that time as well.
Why (it is interesting/relevant): The hashtag is used to draw attention to images of women that would not 'traditionally' be called 'beautiful' because of the euro-centric beauty standards for women. Those standards translate to the Black community in being a "redbone" seen as desireable--lighter skin, lighter eyes, straighter hair, and smaller figures. However, a lot of Black women don't fit that description, and are made to feel ugly as a result. This hashtag allows for woment to protest the normal beauty standards by being confident in their looks, no matter what those looks are.
Identities: This movement, while celebrating all shades of blackness, was really designed to help women of darker shades.
