| A common slogan used by students and youth against the draft during the Vietnam war. http://www.tedhake.com/_DRAFT_BEER_NOT_STUDENTS__ANTI_VIETNAM_WAR_CLASSIC_1960s_SLOGAN_BUTTON___-ITEM1443.aspx |
Who/What: The slogan above was not only one that people would speak but became common through other uses like buttons and the like. It combined humor with anti-war sentiment towards the draft process which most often affected male students. This slogan was part of many used in the 1960's that have become an iconic part of the protest rhetoric of the movement.
Where: Across the US the slogan, "Draft Beer Not Students", was extremely relevant with the people who brought to life the protest against the war, academics and students at universities.
When: The slogan began its use around 1960.
Why: It is interesting to see how the small slogan brought so many important elements of the Vietnam war into focus. It also brings up what kind of impact the youth of a nation have to influence something as large as war.
The object of choice is interested in the identities of Americans who were opposed to the Vietnam War but as clearly stated mostly students who had do deal with the draft which they did not support.
