What/When: Documentary Feature film, premiered by CNN in 2013
(Originally premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival)
Where: The film is about the maltreatment of Orcas in Seaworld's various parks in Orlando, San Diego, and even "Parqo Lore" in Spain. Former trainers in the parks all came forward and agreed to do interviews about the mistreatment and animal cruelty that goes on inside the park walls.
Who/Why: Over the past 20 years, our knowledge about Orcas has soared. Once thought to be dumb, killing machines back in the 1970's, we now know that Orcas have a part of the brain that we don't even have. They are smart, form very bonded family groups, and each pod from the different regions of the ocean has it's own special language. Orcas in the wild swim up to 100 miles a day and yet theme parks house Orcas in tanks that would be comparable to a bath tub to humans. Stepping forward and fighting with activists and lawmakers is a great form of protest, and one that should have been done a long time ago.
