Who: Labor Movement, Chicago Police Force
What: Labor protest rally turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at police. Eight people died as a result of the violence, and eight 'radical' labor activists were convicted in connection with the bombing. Protest was viewed as a setback for the organized labor movement in America, a movement that was fighting for rights like an 8-hour workday.
When: May 4, 1886
Where: Haymarket Square, Chicago IL
Why: Organized by labor radicals to protest the killing and wounding of several workers by the Chicago police during a strike the day before the McCormick Reaper Works- towards the end of the rally, a group of police arrive to disperse the crowd. As police advanced, a bomb was thrown creating open-fire and chaos.
