People Power


Laban sign meaning "Fight" in Filipino. 

Who/what: When the pro-democracy politician, Benigno Aquino was killed in 1983 by Ferdinand Marcos' regime, Corazon Aquino (politicians wife) decided to pick up where her husband left off. While Marcos held a snap election and still won, hundreds of thousands of protestors went onto the streets of Manila and wore Benigno Aquino's signature color. Many also held up the sign in the image above the means "Fight" in Filipino. A mutiny within the army caused Marcos to step down.

Where/when: Feb 7th, 1986 in Manila.

Why: Marcos was a dictator and some people supported the idea of a democracy. Although Marcos won elections, he was said to have intimated the population into voting for him.
